Frequently Asked Questions
- What will my daily schedule look like?
- Since you will be enrolled in high school and
college classes at the same time, your schedule
will probably be somewhat of a hybrid. You will
be involved in classes at the Kehoe Center for 6
hours per day, but you may elect to take additional
NC State electives at other times during the day.
- I can have some great teachers at my home school.
What advantage is there over my high school classes?
- The overall purpose of high school classes is
to prepare you for a college experience. College
Now gives you the opportunity to earn fully transferable
college credit for your efforts. There are no fees
to pay, and no additional tests to take.
- Can I still be involved in activities back at
my home school?
- While the final decision rests with the home school
and within the scope of scheduling, College Now
students will be able to participate in any and
all home school activities.
- Can I still be valedictorian? Are class credits
weighted?
- While class credits are a home school decision,
we would certainly advocate the advanced nature
of College Coursework to be the equivalent of corresponding
AP or advanced high school courses.
- What score do I need on the ACT or the PLAN to
qualify for College Now?
- College Now students will be enrolled at NC State
as Post Secondary Education Option students. Therefore,
by law, you must meet the standard admission requirements
of the college.
- My home school and NC State have different calendars.
Whose calendar will we follow?
- The calendar will be established by the College
Now administration, but will probably follow very
closely that of Pioneer Career Technical Center.
- What about bussing?
- As a college student, you will be responsible
for transportation to and from classes at the Kehoe
Center. Within the parameters of the school day,
transportation will be provided for any field trips
or visitations.
- Are lunches available?
- Lunches will be the responsibility of students.
There will be a designated lunch time, and vending
items will be available for purchase.
- What happens if I don't like it?
- You will be enrolled in a PCTC program and assigned
to Post Secondary Option through College Now. Should
you decide to drop your College Now enrollment,
standard PSEO drop procedures will be followed.
- Are there differences between the College Now
and PCTC programs?
- There are two main differences. The first is that
College Now will have a more advanced level of expectation
for its students. Secondly, College Now students
will be conducting more independent research under
the guidance of the instructors with less direct
instruction (lecture).
- Will College Now meet my home school's graduation
requirements? In a College Prep curriculum?
- While decisions on high school course credits
must be left to the home school, College Now personnel
will be available to assist with any information
related to those decisions. The design of the curriculum
should allow a student the opportunity to graduate
with his/her peers. Further, College Now is just
that, college courses offered to highly qualified
high school juniors and seniors. The courses ARE
college courses, and students will be expected to
maintain a high quality of work.
- How much money can I save?
- It is possible for College Now students to accumulate
enough credits to shorten their traditional college
career by up to two years. Miami University estimates
the average total student cost to be just over $18,000
per year. Of course, your savings may vary depending
on your choice of a university and program.
- What college credits will I get?
- Students successfully completing the College Now
program will earn an Associates Degree in Advanced
Technology Studies. This program will include 24
quarter hours of Electronics/Electrical Engineering,
27 quarter hours of Mechanical Engineering, 12 quarter
hours of Drafting, and 48 quarter hours of General
Education requirements (Freshman Transfer Module)
coursework. A comprehensive list of transfer options
is published by the college biannually.
- How much will this cost my family?
- Since you will be a Post Secondary Education Option
student, there will be no tuition, fees, or book
charges. You must, however, turn in your books at
the end of the courses you take.
- Who's teaching the courses?
- The courses will be taught by North Central State
College professors. There will also be opportunities
for mentorship experiences with practicing professionals.
- Will there be summer classes?
- It is the plan of the academy that students will
encounter a summer experience of a practical nature.
While details are coming, students should plan on
summer participation.
- Where can I go for my Bachelor's Degree work?
- You can take your NC State college transcript
to any school that will accept it. NC State has
written articulation agreements with 4-year colleges
and universities around the state for specific programs
and courses. In addition negotiations continue to
add agreements to the list.
- Will I be a high school student?
- All College Now students will be responsible to
follow the PCTC Parent-Student Handbook and the
PCTC Code of Conduct.
- Will I be a college student?
- All College Now students will be responsible to
follow NC State student conduct policies. Please
note that when policies conflict, the student will
be held accountable to the more restrictive policy.
- What about ID cards?
- It is anticipated that College Now students will
be issued an Identification Card identifying them
as a PCTC/NC State student.
- Can I use NC State's resources?
- As an NC State student, you will be able to access
all appropriate student services and resources.
- Who will I call if I need to be absent?
- You will call your instructor at the Kehoe Center.
- Can I do additional PSEO courses?
- As a College Now student, you will already be
registered for 18 quarter hours per quarter, so
additional enrollments would be very difficult.
- Will I be able to take the SAT or ACT?
- We anticipate that your College Now experience
will actually enhance your abilities and scores
on these standardized tests.
- From where will I graduate?
- Your high school diploma and transcript will come
from your home high school. Your career passport
will come from PCTC, and your Associate's Degree
will come from NC State.
- When will I get my Associate's Degree?
- As an Associate Degree graduate, your degree will
be conferred upon the successful completion of your
program and during the regular NC State commencement
exercises.
